The Mission Is:
To provide easy access to a non-comprehensive and regularly updated list of selected art that has been created in tribute to Amy Jade Winehouse; and, to expose readers to the broader range of art produced by the featured tribute artists.
In a discussion of how pictures reach and impact viewers, world renowned photographer Ansel Adams noted, "We relate best and most strongly to pictures that capture the image that we already have in our own minds. My best pictures don't teach, they simply remind." The Adams maxim poses special opportunities and challenges for artists attempting to capture the physical essence of Amy Jade Winehouse.
On the opportunity side, artists want to show their own unique interpretation of the subject; this marks the work as their own. In the challenge column, rests the hard fact that viewers already have, in their own minds, a fixed image of what the subject looks like. To align and reconcile this potential paradox, the artist must never be obtrusive in the required insertion of a personal mark. The artist's personal presence must be casually discovered by the viewer, not foisted intrusively. And, the expectations of viewers to be reminded must always be met. Artists that conquer the contradiction will deliver joy to viewers, and satisfy the need to personalize their work with a singular stamp of style.
AJW was the definitive shapeshifter, in terms of her ability to change and alter her facial appearance. With thousands of AJW images extant, viewers have general, specific, and multiple pictures stored in memory; their expectations and need to be reminded are manifold. This seemingly high-bar creator can actually deliver an eye of forgiveness that advantages the artist. A work may be considered by viewers to have merit by simply fitting into one or more of many different possible outcomes. The pick and choose possibilities are nearly endless when creating tributes to The Woman of 1,000 Faces, and viewers are ready for them all.
Some Unsolicited Advice
Arguably, the most difficult elements of AJW for even skilled artists to capture involve 'left cheek shadowing.' The irony of this challenge is that it was largely created by famous photographs bearing 'artistic' lighting, and had not a great deal to do with the manner in which AJW generally appeared in life. The fame of the photographed shades and shadows has created a pseudo obligation that many artists think they must meet; those artists who refuse to default on that assumed debt should be certain that they know how to deliver those shadows/shades before they ruin their otherwise worthwhile tributes. It is better to forgo the effort than to attempt it and fail. Practice hard and long, before you show; and, when in doubt, go lighter not darker.
Both the natural and the cosmetic aspects of AJW's eyes make keen and easy targets for tribute artists. The mascara elements are, obviously, the easiest to reproduce, but the expressive nature of the eyes themselves does not require quantum physics to capture. Look deep, see what is true, and translate the orbs in a manner that reminds viewers of the easy - yet ultra penetrating - gaze that helped make the megastar's face an icon recognized around the planet.
Do any cautions and advisories preclude abstract and interpretive tribute attempts? Certainly and obviously not. Freedom must always be the essence of art; if that ceases to be so, the talented seeking acceptance of their expressions might as well be consigned to cranking out propaganda posters for the quellers of every freedom that art has always meant to celebrate. The only usurper of freedom should remain in the heart of the artist, and be imposed only by the goal of reminding and moving viewers. When abstraction and interpretation best accomplish those ends, they must be pursued. As Albert Camus said, “Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better."
Special sensibility considerations should, in my view, always be given when rendering artistic tributes to AJW. Though time has likely swung open the decency gate as wide as it will soon gape, in the interest of the broadest appreciation and acceptance, sensitive artists should avoid incorporating alcohol and tobacco references in their offerings; while the same will seldom be called out or criticized, they often cause unspoken discomfort to viewers, critics, and AJW's family members. No woman ever looked better with a cigarette in her hand/mouth, but using cigs as an identity evoking device is gratuitous and diminishes - via cheap shot - the integrity of the art. The same advisory applies to alcohol.
While the chance that anyone who loves AJW will ever 'get over' losing her in our realm is far less than ZERO, the time for art to denote 'RIP' or other moribund words or symbols has elapsed. In my view, artists hoping to create tributes that will endure as art should move forward and employ their impressive powers to create uplifting images that accentuate the myriad positive elements that made AJW the deserving object of worldwide affection.
Glaringly absent in the still growing inventory of AJW tributes are those that well depict two of the most important aspects of her life; her love of children, and her long devotion to charitable activity. Hopefully, this shortage will, eventually, be remedied.
Some Disclaimers
This leaf is designed to entertain AJW fans and to help aspiring artists educate themselves about the techniques used by others to convey - in a fun and respectful manner - images that remind and interpret. None of the artists featured herein have any financial relationship with jadeink. The art in the picture galleries is selected based solely on the 'likes' of jadeink, and is not intended to represent a good/better/best list. Within reason, skill levels are not a factor considered when assembling the galleries; if the respectful voice of the artist is in a picture, jadeink probably 'likes' it. The picture galleries are not organized by style, medium, availability or price; for more information on such matters, readers should contact the relevant artist. All art and images featured are the property of the artists named thereon.
Update Note: This page will be frequently updated with additional picture galleries. The most recently added galleries, artist profiles and other content will be posted at the bottom of this leaf. An Alpha-Index of featured artists is located below the most recently added picture gallery. Readers that enjoy the content of this leaf should visit often; that is how we 'keep score' at zujava.

2012: Most Improved AJW Tribute Artist
Burak Ozkartal
A resident of Turkey, young Burak has been drawing for a likkle less than a year. He chose a difficult specialty to begin his artistic efforts. When he started out, it looked kinda hopeless; his hand seemed not in touch with his eye. While he still has much to learn - and thousands of hours of practice to endure - his persistence has now begun to yield some adequate results.
Make no mistake, an incautious Burak is still capable of turning out some mysteries. But, when his concentration is perfect - and when he is encouraged to keep working - his hand and eye become good partners. He is not yet near the top of the heap, but he merits recognition as the 2012 Most Improved AJW Tribute Artist.

Sylvain Lafond
AJW Tribute Artist

Sylvain Lafond is an interesting artist for a few reasons. He has several AJW-centric webpages, ultra high-end mechanical and architectural drawing skills, stylized AJW drawing skills, an organized sense of humor, and a body of fun work related to his love for AJW. He is also the president of the Canada chapter of Fan Club Amy Winehouse Trouble.
To many critics, the word "whimsical" has meanings that pretty instantly relate to the concept of "folk art;" a label that is often used to dismiss a talent rather than exalt it. The whimsy exhibited by Lafond is always deliberate; always planned and intentional, always integral to his delightful original concept, never a throwaway afterthought.
We can contrast the whimsy of Sam Shaker to that of Lafond. Shaker is, arguably, one of the planet's finest portrait artists and often employs whimsical add-ons in his work. Shaker's eye is so perfect that we feel his whimsy as mere self-effacing humor/commentary. It is as though he is telling viewers, "I make great art, my eyes are cameras working in precise unison with my hands; and, by the way, I also love the most fun aspects of the world I inhabit - let me show you."
Obviously, Lafond does not bear the experienced portrait precision of Shaker, but Lafond's art is born of a whimsy that is married to his original intentions. He lays his plans around the love of fun, and is able to convey joy in his offerings.

Steph McArthur
AJW Tribute Artist

Steph McArthur is a young painter and sculptor residing in Europe. Somehow, she has stayed largely below the shark-tuned radar of AJW-tribute-artist hunters. A quick look at her portfolio finds what is clearly among the finest bodies of work in the AJW-tribute niche.
McArthur's ongoing tribute project has focused on the multiple moods and messages delivered by AJW's stunning eyes. Using reference photos - and understanding the circumstances surrounding the subject at the time such shots were grabbed - the artist manages to show viewers the emotions of her subject and to fully insert her own distinct style in each of her tributes.
As one who has studied many thousands of AJW images, I would conclude that McArthur's 'capture and convey' skills are astounding. Her passion and love for the subject leaps from each canvas and the viewer is left intrigued, touched, educated and pleased; artist’s mission accomplished.
As the 'Amy’s Eyes' project continues toward the goal of covering a large wall with the painted orbs, McArthur has asked AJW fans to recommend additional reference photos for use in tributes. The shots McArthur likes will be painted and added to the collection.
McArthur is also an accomplished sculptor. Her ‘King Of Pop’ gem may encourage AJW fans to expect some future surprises. If you have not yet heard of Steph McArthur, you likely will very soon.
