Butterfly Garden Plants
Let's create a Butterfly Garden this year! It's really not as hard as it sounds. Just view the Butterfly Garden Plants List below, pick a few and enjoy watching the butterflies come to your yard to feed. If desired, you can plant a few of the proper plants, trees, or bushes that are also listed below to encourage the butterfly life cycle of laying and hatching their eggs.
Most of my backyard has become a flower garden, and I truly enjoy watching the birds, chipmunks, squirrels, and butterflies each year. I've owned my home for 18 years now, and twice in that time frame I was amazed to be the host of migrating Monarch butterflies. Can you imagine seeing over 100 butterflies resting and feeding in your back yard? It's a magical feeling! They stayed for 3 days the last time. I get excited each year, hoping that I'll be blessed again with their visit.

Garden Plants For Butterfly Metamorphosis
Proper Host Plants For Butterfly Catepillars
There are only a handful of flowers and plants that do double duty as food for adult butterflies and a host for eggs and catepillars. I researched this area carefully, thinking at first that available information was 'double listing' the plants & trees.
I did find a few mistakes in published websites (and could tell how many just copied a list without researching), so I compiled this list (and the butterfly food/nectar list) from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, College library documents, and notes from a few live butterfly garden / sanctuaries.
The adult butterfly will enjoy feeding on your flower and tree blooms, but most require different kinds of flowers and plants for their egg laying and hatching. After the eggs have hatched, the catepillar needs to feed in it's immediate area before becoming pupa and developing into an adult butterfly.
If you're a 'neat' and 'tidy' flower gardener, wanting everything perfectly groomed, it may be beneficial to designate a corner or spot in your yard for the butterflies - because you must leave the flower blooms and stalks intact after they're done blooming for the catepillar to feed on the leaves and foilage.

Get A Butterfly House
Shelter For Butterflies
Adult butterflies can live from 1 week to 8 months. Most lovers of butterflies know that the Monarch migrates each year, and can travel over 2,000 miles to their favorite migration areas.... But did you know that some species of butterflies go into hibernation during the winter, and will require protection and shelter? If you trim all of your dead flower and garden plants in the Fall, it would be beneficial to supply butterfly houses for your area's butterflies.
