One of our favorite stories is The Adventures of Grandfather Frog. Thornton Burgess weaves a tale of friendship with insightful glimpses into the frog pond habitat. Keep notes on chart paper about what you learn and what you would like to learn. Later on when go down to the frog pond to compare what you have learned with what you observe.
After many years of teaching children, the following is a list of our very favorite frog stories...
The Adventures of Grandfather Frog takes us into the world of the Smiling Pool where we find Jerry Muskrat, Billy Mink and Little Joe Otter. These are some of the woodland creatures of Thornton Burgess's Green Forest, Babbling Brook and Green Meadow. The short chapters in this book are ideal for read alouds or can be read as first chapter books.
Jim Arnosky is an amazing naturalist artist that can help us see into the life of the frog with beautiful watercolor illustrations and simplistic narrative. Many children have been inspired to draw and paint frogs after seeing the illustrations in Jim Arnosky's All About Frogs!
The Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel are a must read for children who love frogs. These fictional tales show two friends who love and care for each other and set good examples for children learning how to make and keep friends.
