Maddalena Carrai: Magic Amy Fairy on Promo Duty in Support of Amy Winehouse Foundation

Maddalena Carrai is a 20-year-old Italian artist, who is best known to Amy and Gaga fans as the creator of the Creepy Gaga (Mononoke Monster) satirical comic series of caricature drawings and fantasy stories, in which the famous pair interact in sundry fun and strange adventures. Carrai graduated from high school and is now entering a graphic studies program at a university in Florence. She plans a career as an artist and illustrator.

Maddalena has had a long fascination with comic art, and has loved Amy for many years; she even sports a tattoo of the singer. Following the disaster of July 2011, the talented artist became very depressed and sought a "cure" by immersing herself in the development of her highly-stylized drawing skills. The Creepy Gaga series was born from that therapy.

"Amy's art taught me that passion is the key to communicating ideas," Carrai said. "I want my readers to feel my passion for my subjects, to have fun and to embrace my characters and concepts emotionally."

Carrai has no immediate plans to integrate the MAF into the Creepy Gaga stories, but notes, "The MAF is an unpredictable traveler and, from time to time, she may have a reason to visit Gaga and Amy. A magic fairy always goes where it chooses to."

For a while, the MAF will remain nameless. "As the character becomes popular, there may be a reader contest to name her; for now, she will just be 'the MAF' and be known by her good works," Carrai said.

The main storylines surrounding the MAF will involve the creature's interactions with ordinary people that face some type of crisis in their lives. The character will encourage the people she visits to seek solutions to their own problems by reaching out to help others by supporting the goals of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

"I believe that the only things we can really keep are those we give away. The MAF will help teach the people she interacts with that the best way to help themselves overcome obstacles is to help others do the same," the artist explained.

Maddalena has been a cheerleader for the AWF since its inception. "The foundation is the logical continuation of Amy's work," she said. "Amy was one of the most charitable people in the arts and I am so proud to be able to play a tiny part in helping to assure that her work will continue forever."

Combined with Carrai's terrific illustrations, her experience at storyline development should help assure that she and her MAF will have a meaningful impact on raising awareness about what may become AJW's most important legacy: The Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Claims of the MAF's existence first came to light in the late summer of 2011, when hiking tourists at the St. Lucia Volcano reported that "a fairy with likkle angel wings and a beehive hairdo" was seen "bathing" in the nearby curative sulphur springs. For months, sporadic reports of unconfirmed MAF sightings have surfaced around the globe. Now, for the first time, a very modestly detailed report is offered here.

The only publicly known chats with the MAF have been conducted by an elderly man named Ray Samson, a tourist guide residing in the St. Lucian town of Soufriere. He conveyed lite details about some of those chats in an interview with a Barbadian newspaper that subsequently declined to print the story. Jadeink has obtained some of the reporter's notes from that interview.

Q: How did you meet the MAF and why is she only granting interviews to you?

A: I was guiding the tourists that found her and she quickly came to trust me after I brought her home and helped her clean the sulfur mud off of herself. She was a right mess, but cleaned up like a likkle movie star. The MAF loves the tourists with the cameras, but she is shy about talking to the media.

Q: Where is the MAF from?

A: She speaks with a pretty thick British accent, but she has not said exactly where she is from. She mostly just prattles on about how she is on a mission to help people in trouble and to tell the world about the Amy Winehouse Foundation. Of course, when she returns from her trips, she tells me all about her travels and what she did, but I don't really ask her questions. Don't like to pry or be rude; she talks, I listen.

Q: What is the connection between the MAF and Amy Winehouse?

A: Other than the MAF looking a bit like a miniature Amy, I can't say that there is any connection between the two. One of my tourist customers tagged her as a Magic Amy Fairy, and the label just stuck.

Q: Is it true that the MAF can become invisible?

A: Lord no. She just moves so fast sometimes that it seems like she is invisible.

Q: What can you reveal about the MAF's travels?

A: I can tell you she travels a lot. When the time is right, I'll be giving full details about her amazing adventures.

Q: When will the time be right?

A: Soon. Very soon.

It is easy to determine that Ray Samson was being more than a bit guarded - and far less than totally forthcoming - in his responses. Clearly, he knows a great deal more about the MAF than he has thus far revealed.

While few details about the technical specifications of the MAF have yet been confirmed, several science hobbyists have determined that the following specs are likely close to accurate:

* The MAF has shapeshifter characteristics and is capable of shrinking to as small as six-inches high and expanding to as large as 65-inches high.

* The extended wingspan of the MAF is approximately 48-inches, when she is in full-height mode. Her wings are fully retractable.

* The MAF's wing-flap rate has been estimated by several reputable ornithologists at in excess of 10,000 fpm in fully-extended mode; at minimum extension, the fpm rate is many times greater.

* The precise travel speed of the MAF is unknown, but sightings placing her in multiple worldwide locations within minutes of each other indicate that she travels at extremely high speeds. One hypothetical calculation branded the speed rate at "near the speed of thought."

Though lengthy mysteries are usually more aggravating than enticing, we really have no choice but to wait for answers. The first installments of the MAF's adventures - in comic-panel format - are scheduled to be released by July 14, 2012.
