Maneki Neko: Japanese Lucky Cat

The Beckoning Cat (Manekinko)

Beckoning Lucky Cat in Japan: Wikimedia

A popular good luck gift in Japan, the maneki-neko is a cat figure. Traditionally, the cat has a raised paw, in a beckoning or waving gesture. It is believed to bring good fortune and you can see these cat figurines, large and small, in Japanese businesses and in homes. You can buy a lucky cat of your own, or find this cute cat on a range of gifts and shirts. Even if it doesn't make you wealthy, it's sure to bring a smile to your face!

The maneki neko can come in a range of colors, each having a symbolic meaning, but the typical Japense good luck cat is white with a red collar witha bell. While one paw is held in the air to beckon good fortune, the other holds a coin of very high value to indicate great wealth.

Amazon.com: $19.95

Awww, lucky cats in love! These Japanese kitties come as a couple. Each sits on a little red pillow mat with tiny tassels. Although the pair of maneki neko are coin banks (increasing your wealth one coin at a time!) the slots are hidden round the back so you can also just display them for decoration. What a cute (but affordable) gift for an engagement or wedding.

She is also a great fan of the real thing -- the Japanese Bobtail cat -- which is said to have inspired the lucky cat figurines.

Love Birds? You’ll Love Birdorable! Jun 3, 2013
Indigo Janson writes: If you saw my last post you’ll know that lately I’ve been enjoying my back garden bird visitors. Today they included a crow who stopped by to soak a stale slice of bread in the bird bath, along with a jackdaw, my usual crowd of sparrows, some starlings, collared doves and a coal tit. Yesterday, by the loch, I was in the habitat of some less frequently seen birds. A couple of herons could be spotted on the river bank and out on the loch itself were a range...

Happy Little Birds in 3D and Real Life Too May 30, 2013
Indigo Janson writes: This is the time of year when fledglings take to the air. I’ve been enjoying watching them being fed, taking first baths and exploring the world. It was hard to resist the photo opportunities, although not so easy to get close enough. I took these bird bath photos through a window. Although the bath doesn’t look too clean, these little birds get fresh water every day and they certainly make the most of it. This young sparrow was cautiously leaning in to...

How to Use Marieah’s ‘The Fabricator’ May 14, 2013
Indigo Janson writes: I’ve mentioned The Fabricator several times now, and I know some of you have been curious about it. It’s a cool product from Marieah that lets you texture clothing and other items in DAZ Studio. There’s also a version of The Fabricator for Poser. I bought The Fabricator after seeing how much praise it received from other DAZ Studio users. In fact, it appeared more than once in people’s listing of their all-time top products, as well as frequently...

50mm Project: Finding Textures in the Woods May 9, 2013
Indigo Janson writes: This month I’ve joined Kim Manley Ort and several photography friends and inspirations (including Kathy McGraw, Sherry Galey, Sandra of Reflections and Nature, and Deborah Tisch) for Kim’s 50mm Project online photography workshop. A 50mm lens, being fixed-length, requires the photographer to work a little harder for each image. In return, we get sharper, better quality photos and can work in lower light or use the shallow depth of field from the wide...

Creating a Render for a DAZ3D Contest May 5, 2013
Indigo Janson writes: In April I decided to take part in the DAZ3D newbie challenge, which was kindly co-sponsored by Eva1. Eva is one of the professional shader creators, so the contest was to apply shaders to one or more surfaces in your render. These newbie challenges are great because more experienced users are on hand to share advice. Even when the feedback is on someone else’s work, it’s often something everyone can learn from. Obviously, I was delighted that my render...

Birds and Bonnets: I’m Celebrating Spring May 2, 2013
Indigo Janson writes: Spring arrived late this year. The bright colours, birds full of song and warm sunshine are all the more welcome for it. I have to tell you, I was growing impatient and began celebrating the arrival of Spring a while back with my 3D creations. Blue skies and green leaves were a pleasant distraction from the bare branches and fierce winds outside my window. The Dovecote, a gorgeous set by Predatron, was something I picked up during March. I knew it would be a pretty...

Indigo Janson writes: I promised a while ago to start sharing my impressions and experiences with some of my DAZ Studio purchases for 3D rendering. I try not to spend too much in spite of temptation, both for budget reasons and because I still fear too much content will make me lazy about creating my own. That said, the things I couldn’t resist have added versatility and have made playing in Studio 4.5 even more fun. You may remember a while back I introduced you to Stephanie 5. (For...

Yes, they are beckoning luck, although depending on which paw is raised it can also be wealth. Either way, we could all use some. :)
