National Banana Split Day

A Day to Go Bananas!

banana split

National Banana Split Day was created to honor the scrumptious ice cream dish called the banana split. The official date of the celebration varies depending on the source. Most say it's August 25, while some say August 10 or June 8. Personally, I think it should be celebrated on all three days. After all, who can eat too many banana splits?

Let's learn about this unusual holiday and discover clever ways to celebrate it.

The History of the Banana Split

Who Invented It?

No one can say for sure exactly who was the first to invent the banana split. Several have claimed responsibility.

Some say it was invented by Dr. David Strickler in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. In his pre-doctor days, while working at Tassell Pharmacy he supposedly came up with an original ice cream concoction, the banana split, which became a big hit with students at a nearby college.

However, in 1906 Stinson Thomas, promoted it at the National Association of Retail Druggists in Boston.

Whoever the original inventor was, it appears that the banana split was born in a drug store!

How to Make a Banana Split

The Traditional Recipe

Whipped cream
3 Maraschino cherries

1. Split the banana down the middle and place the halves on opposite sides of a banana split dish.

2. Place the three scoops of ice cream between the two halves of banana.

3. Add pineapple on top of the vanilla ice cream, hot fudge on the chocolate ice cream, and strawberry sauce on the strawberry ice cream.

4. Cover the whole thing with whipped cream.

5. Add a Maraschino cherry to the top of each scoop of ice cream.

Bananagrams is a fast and fun game similar to Scrabble, but it doesn't require keeping score. Letter tiles are used to build crossword grids of words as quickly as possible. The letter tiles are stored in a handy banana carrying case. This is one of my favorite word games and apparently a lot of folks agree since it has a 5 star rating on Amazon with over 590 reviews!

I will leave a comment before I "split". I love Banana Splits but had no idea there was a special day, or days, honoring this luscious desert. Now I will have to wait months to celebrate properly. Oh to have found you Leaf last summer.
