Top Ten Horror Films of the New Millennium

horror movies cemetary at night

How do you scare the stuffing out of audiences that have seen all the murder and mayhem before?  The 1980s gave us the crazy revenge killers like Jason, Michael Myers and Freddy Kruger while  the 1990s brought the era of realistic horror with films like Silence of the Lambs and The Blair Witch Project.

So where was horror to go next...into the psychological realm.  Horror films in this century have largely carried a psychological element to them such as Jigsaw's mental games in Saw, the intense paranormal drama of the Paranormal Activity series and the psycho revenge-obsessed evil of The Ring.

This ranking of the best horror films in this century is based on the movie rankings of members at Rankography top ten movies.  At the site, you can discover lots of great recent horror movies by browsing the full composite ranking of horror films since 2000 as well as the individual rankings of members.  You can also save any films you want to see in your Wishlist so you can easily retrieve them when you are looking for something to watch.

Also if you like scary movies, then you should check out our sister site which has published the member rankings of the Scariest Movies of all time.  These films are from any era and horror genre.  If you like to have the stuffing scared out of you, this list is just the ticket.

The Best Horror Films since 2000

The Descent (Original Unrated Widescreen Edition)
Lions Gate Films
Amazon.com: $6.10

Claustrophobia and bloody mayhem collide in the high action horror film. Six women spelunk in an unexplored cavern system that turns out to harbor mysterious, predatory creatures.

This is not a movie for everyone; it is extremely gruesome and will induce panic attacks in anyone with even a mild fear of closed spaces.

The Ring (Widescreen Edition)
Dreamworks Video
Amazon.com: $8.00

The Ring is both an urban legend terror film and an intense revenge movie.  A reporter (Naomi Watts) is researching the death of her niece, who supposedly died from mysterious videotape that kills those that watch it 7 days later.

The final shocking reveal is worth the wait.  This is a suspenseful film that is not as gory as most modern day horror movies, but the suspense is outstanding.

Let The Right One In
Magnolia Home Entertainment
Amazon.com: $11.05

Let the Right One is not a classic horror film but it is shocking in its portrayal of the vampire genre.  This is the story of two teenagers, but one with a deep secret.  Rather than hunt on her own, her caretaker gets her blood through many means.

The comparison of a vampire to a heroin addict was an intense and riveting concept.  This film takes a lot of interesting twists and turns but is thoroughly entertaining throughout.

Paranormal Activity
Paramount
Amazon.com: $8.09

Paranormal Activity is an impressive and harrowing indie chiller that derives much of its terror--and there is quite a bit of that in its brief running time--by playing on the most basic of human fears: that which cannot be seen.

This horror film is shot in the single camera perspective that gives the feel of a documentary.  Clearly this film struck a chord with horror fans as they have now released the third sequel to the original.

Saw
Lions Gate
Amazon.com: $5.69

Adam (Leigh Whannell) wakes up in a room with Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and the body of a guy who looks like he has killed himself. And thus starts one of the most twisted psychological horror films ever.

Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) is a twisted serial killer than likes to pit his victims against one another in a sadistic range of choices.  This film is not for everyone and many classic horror films would say it is not a scary movie, however, this psycho drama will definitely play with your mind.

I like a lot of these, but I really liked The Descent and The Devil's Rejects (this one was by far I think the best this decade). A few of them I haven't seen but they're on my future "must watch" list. Currently this leaf is featured on the home page!

I used to be huge in the horror movie scene... but since I've had kids I can only bear to watch certain ones... vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc... those I can stomach just fine :) You do have a great collection of horror films, however.

Devil's Rejects hands down. Great old school feel with gore and comedy to boot. The Descent is definitely a good runner up. I think 28 Days Later is way overrated and the remakes of Texas Chainsaw and Halloween are horrendous. Dawn of the Dead is the best of the remakes by far.

Very nice list. I must admit I am slightly out of the scene, so most of the movies are unknown to me. This is actually good, because, I know what is still waiting to save me from boredom. Thumbs up!

As much as am a fan of the Saw series I am a much bigger fan of the Halloween series and Rob Zombie did an AMAZING job with Halloween I and II.
