Second Grade: It's Just the Beginning

Getting Math Help in the Second Grade: Is it Necessary?

Second grade is really a pivotal time for children. They're building on the core concepts they learned the previous year. They're starting to really read with expression and they can add and subtract multiple columns of numbers. Everything a child learns in the second grade will carry over to the third grade, fourth grade and beyond. Even though it seems early, this may be the perfect time to start a child on the path to good study habits by providing a good foundation in math.

Education Breeds Success

Apply yourself. Get all the education you can, but then, by God, do something. Don't just stand there, make it happen.

What Types of 2nd Grade Help Programs Are Available?

The problem with most 2nd grade help programs is that they're simply workbooks or computer games. They're not truly rooted in education and they may be testing your child on concepts he or she already understands, without really concentrating on areas where they are weak or need improvement. Fortunately, the best 2nd grade help programs use adaptive learning technology to remedy this. This technology learns and intelligently revises the curriculum automatically as your child shows improvement and progresses through the program. A computer-based system can include unique characters and problem-solving issues that engage and interact with children, while instructing them on grade level-appropriate learning objectives that will keep them on track with their peers.

Involved Parents Means Successful Kids

Helping your Child Begins at Home

The best programs help keep parents and caregivers informed as well. With these types of instructional aides, you can immediately login through a password protected area and monitor your child's progress. See where they're struggling and what they've done well on. You can even print out the reports to discuss with your child's teacher if you'd like. This lets you be involved in your child's learning experience - setting a good foundation for you as well.

A recent study by Jon Miller at Michigan State University found that parents were a major influence on the decision to pursue a career in math or science. It's not just children that need help - parents do too and when you emphasize the importance of math and science to your children, you may be setting them on the path to a successful career in engineering, computer science or other high-tech industry.

Welcome to Zujava! Congratulations on graduating from the Petting Zu. My wife is more the math-science person between the two of us, I'm more the English-History one. When our daughter gets older (she's two), we hope that will make things well rounded when it comes to homework help time. Nice work!

I remember my dad sitting with me when I was in 2nd grade and teaching me lots of interesting math concepts. He struggled with math as an adult and wanted to be sure I didn't miss out on early foundation learning. I think it's important to use adaptive techniques that work with your child's learning level.

My kids did well with computer learning programs such as Reader Rabbit and I can't remember the others off of the top of my head. Proper parent involvement can be so important at this age.
