Super Mario 3D Land

One of the Toughest Mario Video Games Ever - in 3D!

super Mario 3D Land

Super Mario 3D Land is one of the best Mario games ever released. Bold statement, yes, but this game delivers in terms of challenge, graphics, and fun factor. It also heralds the return of the massively popular Tanooki Suit from Super Mario Bros 3, which allowed Mario to swat enemies with his tail and turn into a statue to avoid enemies. Much of the Tanooki Suit's powers return in this awesome 3D adventure.

On this page, we'll discuss the power-ups, the enemies, the storyline, the graphics, and the secrets of Super Mario 3D Land. If you think this game is just another Mario platformer, think again. It has beautiful graphics that really showcase what the 3DS is capable of, and is incredibly challenging even for seasoned Mario players.

Is it Challenging?

How Super Mario 3D Land ranks in difficulty

One of the things that I liked about this game is that it wasn't easy. When I first learned that the bosses were repetitive (you fight the same ones over and over), I thought maybe that might be a bit monotonous for a game in 2012. That wasn't the case, and there's a major twist at the end of the game when you defeat Bowser that really threw me for a loop.

If you're one of those gamers that tends to beat a game in a few days, this won't be one of those games. This game took me weeks of playing to get to the final levels, and I still haven't fully beat the game. Let's just say that the twist I referred to earlier drives up the difficulty level considerably.

For a return on investment of cash spent, I'd say I spent my money wisely. I played this game quite a bit, and now that I'm writing this, I want to go play it again, even though I have other games I haven't even opened yet. Even pros that have mastered most Mario games will find this challenging, especially the later levels where you encounter Mario's evil "Cosmic Twin."

Super Mario 3D Land on Amazon

Brand new, ships free - and fast

I've always bought my video game purchases on Amazon, for the most part. 9 times out of 10, between the cost of shipping and the price of the game brand new, I usually find the cheapest price on Amazon. I haven't had a broken product arrive yet from Amazon, so I'm pretty happy with using them.

As for the game itself, the instruction booklet has some nice illustrations, and gives some maneuvers and tips that I only recently noticed. Mario has some new moves in this game that I wasn't aware of until reading the instruction booklet. I should've learned in grammar school, always read the directions first. So far, I've been happy with my Super Mario 3D Land purchase, and I've played it for hours on end. The reviews on Amazon are very high, with 4.5 stars out of 5. Other gaming sites have also positively reviewed this game.

Bowser vs Mario

You've been warned. After defeating World 8, you'll have to defeat 8 entirely new levels (well, they are reminiscent of the first 8 in design). These are far more difficult than the first eight, and actually make them look like child's play. In the second half, you'll face tough time limits, tougher enemies, and the persistent, mimicking "Cosmic Twin" evil Mario, which was seen in the Mario Galaxy games. You'll also have a much tougher time finding the hidden star coins for these levels. You may just resort to Googling the walkthroughs for the star coins on YouTube (I know I did!). Even after several attempts, I haven't found all of the star coins in this game, which adds a whole new challenge even after you've completed the game.

The game includes lots of elements from previous games, as you can see, like the hidden gold star medals, the Tanooki suit, and the collapsing bridge at the end of the first castle. The 3-D gameplay makes it all new and fresh, and the new moves add a plethora of new ways to attack enemies.
