What harm can common garden insects do?
by Oakwood
The magic of a garden is that it is full of plant, insect and animal life. Most of it will be relatively harmless, and a lot of it will be beautiful. A small number of insects however, can make life difficult for the gardener intent on preserving the fragrant flora of the garden. Some of these garden pests can devour entire plant populations, but eventually metamorphose into beautiful butterflies that give us joy and pleasure.

CD Hanging in the Garden - Photo by orange3
I love eating fresh picked fruits and vegetables strait out of the garden. SO DO THE BIRDS! This is a battle that has been going on with me and the birds for sometime. I don't mind sharing some of the harvest with them but they can't have it all! So my quest began to find ways to keep the birds away from the produce.Photo by: orange3
Creating a Fairy Garden
by lakeerieartists
Miniature setting in a fairy garden
A fairy garden is a cute addition to any home garden or landscape. Fairy gardens can range from very simple to quite elaborate, and can be very small to large in size. There are really no set rules for exactly what a fairy garden should be or exactly how to go about setting one up, however the general rule of thumb is to keep things in small scale.
The Best Garden Tool
by GrandmaShari
I love to garden and spend most of my summer planting, pulling weeds and enjoying all of my hard work.  I'm not an expert when it comes to gardening but I do pay attention to my soil and make sure I don't buy plants that won't work in my garden.  It is a waste of money which, I honestly, don't have.
The Benefits of House Plants

Even Cats Love House Plants (Image Flickr)
I have a lot of house plants.I really enjoy them and so do the cats, but many of them are tough to grow. That's because I live in the far north. In the dead of winter we only get a couple of hours of daylight. That means I cut way back on their watering, stop feeding them growth products and supplement their light with grow lights for a couple of hours a day. I also move them all into the living room so I can use a space heater to supplement their warmth when it's really cold and not worry about wasting money by cranking up my furnace.

I believe roses are undoubtedly one of the most coveted flowers which is why having a rose bush in your backyard can score you high points among your friends and peers. While saying this, rose bushes are not always the easiest to maintain but the eventual fragrance of fresh roses is certainly worth every effort.Overall, taking proper care of a rose bush is very important and perfecting the art of becoming a skilled pruner will take some time.Image Credit: Rhosyn on sxc.hu

Planning for a High-Producing Organic Vegetable Garden in a Small Space
I’m planning my seed order for our organic vegetable garden. My challenge is to grow as much food as possible in our small space garden, which consists of two 4’ x 20’ beds. So I have four things to consider as I choose each vegetable.- Is it well suited to my zone 6 temperate rain forest climate?- Does it give good value for the space it takes up?- Will it yield well in my garden conditions?- Does it have high nutritional value?

Remington 14" Electric Limb & Trim Chain Saw - Copyright Country Sunshine
Living in the country and heating my home with wood results in a lot of tree cutting.  While I have a gas powered chain saw for cutting down large trees, I’ve found the Remington 14” Limb & Trim chain saw works well for the smaller limbs.   It is easy to hold and operate, runs on an electrical extension cord, and cuts just as well as the larger gas chain saws. My Remington Limb & Trim Electric Chain Saw - by Country Sunshine

Digging Up Stones

Pink Pueblo - Thank You!
When I wrote my first leaf here on Zujava, my hands still had a bit of dirt on them from working in the yard. In fact, I actually meant to come inside for a few minutes to visit with my parents and to cool off, and I found myself drawn to Zujava to write my second leaf. I love every minute spent with my parents. I love writing. I love gardening and yardwork.

Cucumbers grow on simple to make DIY trellis in small vegetable garden
Want to grow more delicious vegetables in less garden space? Grow your cucumbers and other vine-growing veggie plants on a sturdy home made garden trellis. This spring I built a 3 ft x 5 ft garden trellis to support the cucumbers in our vegetable garden.I made the DIY cucumber trellis from leftover wire garden fence and two saplings cut from the woods in my back yard. This strong and simple vegetable trellis took me about an hour to build using simple hand tools (saw and hammer).

In my first post on gardening, I talked about some of the perennials that make up my gardens, and why I chose them. In part two, I will continue that topic and also give you some insight into additional workhorses in our perennial gardens. We don't have a lot of time to devote to gardening, so most of our plants are low-maintenance and extremely hardy. The blooming season can be short in these parts, so drink it in and enjoy!
Small Space Gardening: Grow Veggies on a Vegetable Trellis
by Pastiche
Peas growing below cucumbers on vegetable trellis in my garden.
If your home garden space is small and you're looking for a way to get more produce from a tiny vegetable patch, try growing veggies on a trellis or vertical plant support. Many vegetables produce more fruit in less space grown on a vegetable trellis. Veggies grown vertically are easier to harvest, and they stay clean with less rot, too.
Favorite Summer Perennials for New England Gardens

lush perennial garden in Massachusetts
I remember when my husband and I moved into our house thirteen years ago. It was our first (and to date, only) home purchase. We were coming from a 2nd floor apartment that did not offer much in the way of "green space," so at that time, gardening and landscaping were not our forte. Being that I have a long track-record of quickly and effortlessly killing every single indoor plant ever purchased, I wasn't sure how I would handle the upkeep of a yard in the 'burbs. At the time, the home we purchased had a small rock garden and some shrubbery surrounding the foundation.

Grow More Food with Square Foot Gardening
by Art-Aspirations
Optimize your gardening time, energy and space for a bigger yield of food for your table.
Square foot gardening is the most logical and efficient method of growing vegetables that I have ever encountered. If you have a small, sunny patch of land, I hope you'll consider growing some vegetables on it. And when I say small, I'm talking about 4 feet by 4 feet. That's not much space, but it's the size of a single square foot garden. You'll be quite surprised at how much you can grow in just one 4' x 4' raised bed when you use the square foot garden method.
