  • Tasmanian Tiger

The scientific name of the Tasmanian tiger, Thylacinus cynocephalus literally means 'pouched dog with wolf head' is the largest of the marsupial carnivores. Also known as the Tasmanian wolf the animal is usually referred to as the Tasmanian tiger because of its tawny color and blackish-brown stripes over the hindquarters.

The young, in litters of four, are carried for several months in the mother's pouch, which opens backwards. The tiger is a lone nocturnal hunter.

  • Locksmithing

The most primitive forms of fastening were by means of knotted thongs, or a wooden or metal bar placed across the inside of a door. A curved key, shaped somewhat like a sickle, was used to move the bar, and examples have been found in many parts of northern Europe. The earliest locks of all are probably the Chinese, of which some extant specimens are as secure as any made in Europe up to the 18th century. Some Egyptian locks are known to be 4000 years old, and locks on the Egyptian plan may be found in many remote places in Europe.

  • Sloth

Sloths are slow-moving, tree-dwelling mammals native to the tropical forests of Central America and South America. Sloths have a slender body, a rounded head, and coarse shaggy hair, which is often greenish because algae grow in it. The greenish color helps to camouflage the sloths among trees. The sloths' long limbs end in narrow curved hands and feet, which are equipped with long curved claws.

  • Epistemology

Epistemology means the study of knowledge, and the word comes from the Greek episterne, meaning knowledge or science. Epistemology asks 'What is knowledge, and how do we acquire it?'.

The subject includes questions about moral or ethical thought: 'Can there be knowledge of right and wrong, or is there nothing beyond taste, custom and convention in this matter?'.

Epistemology also includes theological questions: 'Is it possible to know if a God - or gods - exists? And, more recently, 'Have we any reason to assume the male pronoun? Perhaps She exists'. And so on.

  • Typography

Typography is the art of printing by type, and the art of choosing the type faces which are used in the production of newspapers, books, magazines and leaflets.

A graphic designer stipulates the types, the margins and the colors of inks which are to be used, and in some instances the paper on which the job is to be printed, but he is not directly concerned with the mechanical reproduction of his work on the printing press.
